About the Nowegian Whalers Base

Trip Details

Norwegian Whalers Base

The historic Norwegian Whalers' Base was established in the 1920's to provide an overwintering base for harpoon boats used by the whalers in the Ross Sea of Antarctic. For nine seasons, the Norwegians travelled to Antarctica to capture blue whales, finally abandoning the site in the 1920's, which has now largely reverted to native forest.

The overwintering base was set in a beautiful part of Paterson Inlet in sheltered waters overlooking Kidney Fern - a, scenic boat ride from Golden Bay Wharf. A delightful short walk takes you from Millars Beach Jetty to the Whalers' Base where the foundation of buildings, propellars and boilers along with other artefacts still remain. Interpretation panels provide an insight into the life of the Norwegians and Stewart Islander's who worked and lived at the Whalers' Base.
