There
are so many options how do I choose the best trip for me?
You can
select from one of our Packages, see Day
Packages or Overnight
Packages or
Another
good starting point is to decide which category you want:
- a guided nature walk/hike (see Guided
Walks & Hikes Options) or
- a birding trip (see Kiwi
Spotting & Bird Watching Options) or
- a sea kayaking trip (see Guided
Sea Kayaking Options)
- a road tour (see Island
Culture Scenic Road Tour)
- a boat cruise (see Boat
Cruises Options)
Please note, some of the Walks & Hikes and Sea Kayaking options
have been shown as "Birding Options" as an easy reference
for birders.
After
deciding the category, you need to choose between day or overnight
options (or you can book a combination of trips as some of our
clients are doing).
Having
worked out whether you prefer day or overnight trips, check the
trip details for the trip which appeals most and suits
your fitness and ability. Also check if the day or overnight
options fit in with your existing travel plans by looking at
the Departure Dates.
If you need help or suggestions, please contact
us. We are always happy to assist.
What
is the weather going to be like?
This
is a difficult question for all of us living in Stewart Island.
We have very changeable weather, and forecasts may not materialise.
We generally have a mild climate, it may be windy, it may be calm.
It rarely rains all day, but it could be sunny. Be prepared - always
carry a raincoat and warm clothing. See Weather.
How
many people will be in the Group?
Details
of minimum and maximum numbers are shown against each trip. On day
trips we can have upto 12 persons independent travellers (the number
is higher for private groups). Independent travellers are not mixed
in with private groups. Currently, our experience is that the average
number of persons on day trips are between 4 to 8 persons for independent
travellers, so you can be assured of a quality experience.
On overnight
trips we can have upto 6 people for all trips except the Rakiura
Great Track where we are allowed a maximum of upto 12 people. We
do offer private trips, but rates vary accordingly.
How
can we get to Stewart Island?
There
are daily scheduled fixed wing flights between Invercargill Airport
and Stewart Island or you can travel by ferry between Bluff to Stewart
Island. Helicopters can also be chartered. For details see Getting
Here.
Where
can we stay on Stewart Island
There
is a choice of accommodation depending on your preference and budget.
For details see Accommodation.
Where
is Golden Bay Wharf
Golden
Bay Wharf is in Stewart Island, about 10 to 15 minutes walk from
the Oban Village, Halfmoon Bay. See Maps.
On
Overnight treks or Overnight Sea Kayaking trips what type of Accommodation
is there?
On overnight
trips we usually stay at or near a Department of Conservation back
country hut. These have bunkrooms with comfortable mattresses (no
pillows), a kitchen area, cold running water and outside long drop
toilets. All facilities are mixed and shared with other independent
hikers. If we camp, tents supplied are two-person tents. We can
supply single-person tents subject to availability.
