About the Rakiura Great Walk

The Rakiura Track is classified as one of New Zealand's Great Walks. It is a relatively easy three-day walk, mainly through regenerating native forest, with coastal sections and sites of historical significance. The walk is a loop from Halfmoon Bay, Port William, North Arm (Paterson Inlet), returning to Halfmoon Bay.

We are offering a one-day guided trip: Coastal Highlights, from Port William to Halfmoon Bay and the three day Rakiura Great Walk.

"Thank you Furhana, Jane & I and the kids had a wonderful time ...an experience we will never forget. From the moment we started walking until the moment we stopped everything was new and exciting..."
Donovan Family - Australia

What we do (click here for Map)

Meet with your guide from Ruggedy Range™ Wilderness Experience before your trip, for a briefing to discuss plans for the Rakiura Great Walk.
Hiking is approximately 5 - 6 hours, 12 kms daily.

Day 1 - Meet in Halfmoon Bay for our courtesy transfer to Lee Bay. Subject to client preference and fitness we take a side trip up Garden Mound (approx. 1.5 hours climbing to 162 mtrs) where we enjoy the surrounding views. Continue on the coastal track through regenerating forest to Little River with its picturesque setting, and onto Maori Beach. Maori Beach, once the site of a Maori village and sawmill site has reverted to wilderness and has a lovely stretch of golden sandy beach. Lunch at Maori Beach, time to enjoy the golden sands and stories of early European history.

We continue along the track, past lush tree ferns to Port William Hut. During December to February and when huts are busy we use the nearby campsite, a few minutes walk from Port William Hut overlooking Magnetic Beach. Time for a swim for those who like cool waters!

Day 2 - We hike across the inland summit track through beautiful native forest and across swing bridges straddling small creeks. Taking time to enjoy the views from the lookout tower over to Paterson Inlet and the Tin Range in the South, before descending to North Arm Hut. During December to February and when Huts are booked out, we use the campsite at Sawdust Beach, 45 minutes walk from North Arm Hut.

Day 3 - We follow the northern shore of Paterson Inlet past Kidney Fern Arm and Kaipipi Bay, former sawmill sites showing little evidence of their past history, through towering native forest and onto Halfmoon Bay. On your hike, immerse yourself in the tranquility and superb views of Paterson Inlet!
