Weather

We live in the roaring forties and have changeable, oceanic weather, sometimes experiencing four seasons in one day. Each year brings different weather, making predictions a bit difficult. Always wear or bring suitable clothing and a raincoat to Stewart Island.

The average temperature is approx. 15 degrees celcius in the summer and approx. 9 degrees celcius in winter. However, temperatures do rise above and occasionally drop below this mean. Our temperature can often be a few degrees warmer than Invercargill, the capital of Southland, because of the warming effect of the surrounding seas.

The average yearly rainfall is 1600 mm - 1800 mm (approx. 60 - 70 inches) in Oban Township but higher further south. The rainfall in the Township area is less that the average rainfall in the South Island's West Coast which is over 3000 mm.

Our Island is exhilarating during stormy days and utterly beautiful and highly memorable during calm, sunny days...

Whatever the weather, Stewart Island is an experience not to be missed!
