Stewart Island has a variety of accommodation as noted below. During peak periods (Christmas & New Year to March and Easter), many of the popular places tend to be booked out. We therefore, recommend advance bookings.

Ulva Island does not have accommodation. Ulva Island is largerly held as part of Rakiura National Park with a small piece of private property owned by the Hunter Family Trust. The Hunter Family accommodation is not available for public let.

The majority of accommodation is in Oban Village in Halfmoon Bay and within easy access of all the facilities (shops, restaurants, cafes, post office, flight & ferry arrivals/departures). Accommodation is also available away from the main village, including Golden Bay and upto Horseshoe Bay. Facilities vary depending on choice of accommodation. Please note, the Hotel/Motel category has some cooking facilites in each room, allowing you to self-cater if you wish.

14 MAIN ROAD BACKPACKERS
We have purchased an old house in the centre of Oban Village, immediately opposite the Department of Conservation office and are planning to open a 5 bed backpackers in January 2013. As an old 1940's wooden house, it needs alot of care, however, we are hoping to make it comfortable and rent it as backpacker accommodation, so that we can raise the money to carry out necessary work on the property.

Accommodation can cost more than in the South Island because things like electricity, heating and laundry cost more.
